How to Spot Fake or Uncertified PPE Before You Buy
October 30, 2026
Fake or untested PPE looks the same as the real thing until the day you need it. A helmet that shatters or a boot that does not stop a nail gives a false sense of safety. These checks take a few minutes and catch most problems.
Check the product itself
- Markings on the item: real PPE has the standard (for example EN 397 or EN ISO 20345), the size and the maker’s name printed or moulded on the product, not only on the box.
- Date of manufacture: helmets, harnesses and gloves have dates or batch numbers.
- Information leaflet: genuine items come with instructions from the maker.
- Quality: check stitching, finish and materials. Thin plastic, glue marks and uneven seams are warning signs.
Ask for proof
Ask the seller for the certificate or test report and check that it names the same product, brand and standard. A certificate for a different model does not prove anything. On this site, listings with a Certificate checked badge have had their certificate looked at by our team.
Check the price and the seller
- A price far below every other seller is a warning sign.
- Look for a Verified badge, reviews from other buyers and how long the seller has been on the site.
- Be careful with sellers who refuse to answer questions about standards or who push you to pay in advance.
Inspect before you pay
Meet in a public place, inspect the goods and compare them with the photos. Choose pay on delivery where the seller offers it. If something looks wrong, report the listing and our team will look at it.
Not sure where to start? Browse listings and filter by Certificate checked.
This guide is general information. It does not replace a risk assessment of your own workplace, and you should always follow the maker’s instructions for the product you buy.
